Hi,

Do CDMA phones use the gsm codec?

Nope.

CDMA uses the EVRC codec, which is better at filtering out background
noise than the GSM codec. EVRC sounds better than that farty sounding
codec CDMA used to use, which again wasn't the same as GSM.

Even GSM phones rarely use the GSM 06.10 codec that is in Asterisk these
days. CDMA never did.

Isn't AMR supposed to be the codec used in GSM nowadays ? I remember
seeing something like this in Nortel PVG/Packet Trunking for GSM,
AMR/AMR-HR or something like that.

AMR can be used with 2G GSM, but is most commonly used with 3G UMTS
(along with AMR-WB, the wide band version). The commonest codecs for GSM
are the EFR (enhanced full rate) and HR (half rate) codecs.
