SIP can set up sessions of any kind.

RTP can serve as a transport for whatever you want.

Ergo, it all depends on the endpoints.

I do believe that conferencing implies the mixing and timing of the
rtp, and then redistributing the mixed feeds to the end points. At
least this is how polycom implements it, not that they are perfect,
but they do a pretty damn good job.

At the very least asterisk would need to be able to multicast the
video feeds, is this currently possible?

I'm a little confused, when someone says voice conference usually it
is implied that there are more than 2 people in the conference. Was
the original person asking about actual conferencing or just simple
calling (which asterisk does out of the box), which seems to be what
everyone is replying to.

Not sure if they can provide the competency you are lacking, but maybe

While we have this thread going. Anyone here have experience with
using or deploying a polycom setup. I know the VC2 stuff looks pretty
sick, and it would be cool to hear from someone who has used/
implemented it.

I have had great stability Window 2000/2003 Server. I guess it
depends what you are doing with it. Uptimes of over two years on
Exchange, file shares, DNS, DCHP, MSSQL.

IIS can be flaky though.

I am going to dive in and see what's what.

Usually, video conferencing hardware (Sony, Tandberg) doesn't use
multicast for conferencing itself. Unicast only.
