I just read a blog post about this.

My main questions about it would be
1. whether it will be licenced in such a way as to permit free
software/open-source implementation in FreeSWITCH. I suppose this partly
depends on IETF's patent policy.
2. How it compares with Celt, which doesn't give rise to any known patent
issues and is available for FreeSWITCH today.
for other FreeSWITCH users who wish to experiment with Celt and listen to
high-quality wide-band calls, it should be noted that Celt is still under
development and backward-incompatible changes have occurred in the past.
Making sure that both endpoints are using the same version of Celt solves
this, otherwise the audible results can be rather unpleasant.

SILK will NEVER take off if they don't stop jerking developers
around. I have a silk binary but its 32bit only... You CAN NOT link a
32bit .a file into a 64bit .so just won't work. And I emailed about
this fact and I got brushed off .. it takes only a few seconds to
compile a 64bit version yet they seem to not be interested.
CELT will win this battle. Its Open it works NOW.

The submission to the IETF changes this situation in that, subject to patent
issues, someone could write their own implementation.

Its early days for the IETF work, but its possible SILK and CELT might
merge into one codec. The authors are certainly on amicable terms right
now. The snag with IETF stuff is it moves like molasses, so its hard to
say whether anything will happen on a sane timescale.

Well, if they aim to keep to their original plan, ahead of anything
interesting the IETF might do, they are starting to look a little tardy.

Doesn't SILK scale down on bandwidth much lower than CELT can?
