I would like to have this, since I live in a country where patents
don't affect us.

I would watch a blanket statement like that. You would be surprised
to find out how far those patents reach.

Don't be so judgemental. He might be part of an Antarctic expedition, or

My company wrote a g729/g723 codec for CallWeaver last year completely
independently of the Readytechnology codec. It is fully functional but was
never publicly announced (although is publicly available) due to discussion
on CallWeaver lists indicating it probably wouldn't be accepted.

We purchased a redist license for the Intel libraries and verified with
Intel that said libraries could be redistributed free as in beer.

Overview

This software provides G.729 and G.723.1 codecs for Callweaver based on
version 5.1 of the Integrated Performance Primitives library provided by
Intel. The codecs are implemented as a thin wrapper around Intel's Unified
Speech Codec Interface (USC) sample for IPP. This allows codecs exposed by
the USC interface to be easily adapted for use by Callweaver.

The Makefile allows for either static or dynamic linking to the appropriate
IPP libraries at run time to handle different architectures without
recompiling.

The code can be found at http://www.zettaserve.com/default.asp?catid=78 and
if anyone wants to adapt it for use with FreeSwitch please feel free. I am
not a coder and so have no idea how hard or easy it may be to adapt for use
by FreeSwitch, however I do know that our codec is much easier to compile
than the Readytechnology codec. It was developed and tested on OpenBSD 4.0
and is known to work on Linux. Of course the user is responsible for any
applicable codec licensing. We do not provide binaries.

Craig

I live in Paraguay, doesn't that only affects in the U.S? Correct me
if I'm wrong, but I guess the patents issue is only in the U.S.

You do realize its like 16 pages of patents.

IANAL but why would 16 pages of patents matter? Afaik if you don't have
software patents in your country then you can use this stuff legally.
Am I missing something?

Patrick

Just saying you would be shocked to know how far reaching the patents
are... even in a country where you think software patents don't apply.

What relevance has software patents to this discussion?

interesting discussion, ive always wondered about the use of the "Open Source" implementation.
however I agree it is fraught with pitfalls.

the real interesting one would be the ability to use the TC400B
http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Bounty

if I could buy that card ( about $1450 ) and run 120 channels of G729 then thats great value.
that works out at about $12 per G729 codec license, which is not a whole lot more than the digium software license.
AND you dont bulk down your CPU with it... which is even better !!!

tell you what, I reckon this card ( and others like it if there are any ) should be the first target for G729 on freeswitch
especially if its quite easy to work with that API.

now to figure out how to get that PCI card into my HP blade server Razz
( might need a few 1ru boxes JUST for transcoding RTP )

But with modern CPU's 120 channels isn't that much of a stretch is it?

Not sure how easy that would be since you have to use the latest dhadi release to interface with it.

Your probably right...

Bummer..

I just thought.. if it were as simple as tweaking the Zaptel bindings to make that card work, then it could be a
simple response to those that want G729.

oh well.. Im just lucky, that everything im doing is G711 at the moment.
kinda not looking forward to the day when a customer insists on G729.
I dont want to put any Asterisk boxes in, even if its just for transcoding.

we just have to map the ioctls and thats it. I haven't looked at how
it works but if its anything like I think it is.. its not that far of
a stretch.
