Hi folks,

Because of our shared interests on this list, I suggest some of you
consider using Twitter.com to follow the people whose comments you
enjoy on the list or those you know by name and reputation. I was
reminded of my own interest in this idea by the fact that a few people
from the asterisk world began following me, and recognizing their
names, I immediately follow them as well. This is great for Astricon
when a lot of us are in one place but have no means to meet up other
than IRC which isn't optimum for this purpose. As you know, I'll be in
Berlin for Asterisk Tag later this month and I'm looking forward to
meeting everyone there where possible.

I always generate a reminder about 15 minutes before the Friday
conferences on Twitter. I read the quick thoughts of Cory Andrews and
Garrett Smith and look further into what they talk about if I'm
interested.

Twitter can be used from any browser but there are also standalone
clients that work on any platform. I know it isn't everyone's cup of
tea, but I find it can be great for any vertical interests you may
have. You can compare it to IRC except that you have to explictly
"follow" a person in order to see what they post and posts are limited
to 160 characters.

If you can, try it out and see what you think. I'd love to see more of
you over there. If you hate the idea or try it and don't like it, just
forget it, you won't have lost anything except maybe a few minutes.
I'm not tied to it, but I've found it useful in other communities so
why not asterisk and VoIP?

If you do try Twitter, be sure to look at hashtags.net which allows a
sort of keywords system. This and other search devices allow you to
look up things like "polycom" or whatever. Someone more into this
than I am can better explain it, but it's a huge data store and the
more people with like interests (voip, asterisk, phones) the more
useful the data is and the better the chances of learning about new
things.

Cheers,

/r (for randulo)
