Hi,

My prospective setup is :
PSTN ----<PRI> ---- Asterisk with TE2XXP card ---- <PRI> ---- PBX ----
Phones, faxes or modems

Does it have a chance to work with plain old analog modems (as I can't
remember if a Digium TE2XXP card provides some sort of switching between PRI
channels from different PRI ports) ?

Regards

It has a good chance. 56k modem maybe not, but 33.8 or slower.

Echocancelwhenbridged=no

Thanks,

I totally agree with Steve, but I'm also quite curious as to what the "PBX" in
your diagram is... that might play a huge factor in whether or not your setup
will work.

Have you tried faxing and modems directly through the Alcatel? If it
works well, then I would not expect too much of an issue.

The main issue with faxing and modems are latency and lossy codecs.
TDM with alaw/ulaw end to end "should" be OK.

Steve Totaro

In fact, today's setup is :
PSTN ----<PRI> ---- Alcatel OXE PBX ---- Phones, faxes or modems

I'm wondering if inserting an Asterisk server between PBX and PSTN would
break modems and faxes.
For phones, I'm confident it will work.
Any call that will cross Asterisk would be treated without any echo
cancellation or codec translation.

So the main question is "is TE2XXP-enabled Asterisk able to switch TDM
without introducing latency that would spoil modem or fax services ?".

Well YMMV, ztool, zttest, etc may help you determine how well you
Asterisk box is handling zap (DAHDI). You obviously want good scores.

We are doing something similar today with successful phones, fax, and modem... PURE TDM.. no SIP

Example Below....

PSTN ----<PRI(s)> ---- <Asterisk> ---------------- <Nortel PBX> ---- Phones, faxes or modems

|
|------------------ <Avaya PBX>---- Phones, faxes or modems

Just make sure echocancel is disabled when bridged and you should be fine. Also whatever card you get, make sure the timing is set properly. I have a 2-port sangoma much like your setup, the PRI is the main timing source, the 2nd port goes to a Nortel which inherits timing from the PRI as well. Once timing was setup properly my modems/faxes work fine.

Jeremy... Just curious, do you use SIP/RTP at all for fax/modems ?

Yes. That board is able to do an on card native bridge which will allow
the TDM data to skip going to the host, giving a very low latency
bridge. You need to make sure in your Dial() command in the Asterisk
server that you don't utilize flags that will keep a native bridge from
occurring. (hHtT and a few others)
