If something is officially released, it is considered stable, from a
prescriptive point of view.
Whether that proves to be the case in fact... is a matter of
considerable controversy and objective variation.

Are there any features in 1.4 that you desperately need? If not, then why
upgrade?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You are already so far behind that any
upgrade is going to be a major task of testing and verification on your
part, so why not just wait until you have an actual reason to upgrade.
As long as it's being supported and does it's job for you, I'd just stay
right where you are.

He's right, I have a client who is running 1.2 but wishes to upgrade and
it's going to be a pretty large undertaking. If nothing else, look at
the change logs for 1.4 AND 1.6 and then decide if you're in need of an
upgrade. |

In practice, upgrades to 1.4 are not all that difficult unless you
areusing many deprecated things in 1.2. All we tend to hit is that
queue members defined in queues.conf are permanent --
RemoveQueueMember does not remove them.
I upgraded my home Asterisk to 1.6 beta, and the only thing broken so
far was a Dial command with | used as a separator. I was rather
impressed.

Well - three reasons to upgrade:
- *when* you hit that issue that you cant solve, and you ask for help,
the first reply for a 1.2 release will be to upgrade, as 1.2 isnt
supported for any more development... I'd take the hint..
- *when* that big security issue becomes apparent, and you need to fix
it, you'll then be in a panic/rush to get the upgrade done, not to
mention all the fixes that are already in place to solve just such
issues since 1.2...
- *when* you need that new feature.... etc etc...
I follow the theory that if its less of a headache to upgrade now, in
quiet time, then that's much better than having to upgrade later, when I
really don't want to.
I have two servers. One that acts as primary, and the other that acts as
a hot-swap backup, but is also used for testing the new releases (at
least functionality testing). Whenever I see an announcement about a
security bug or a major release, I upgrade the backup machine to see
what happens. If it looks good, I upgrade the primary.
I did the 1.2 -> 1.4 upgrade and I didn't hit any major grips (but then
I have a simple IP only, no fancy features setup).

If I am not mistaking, 1.2.x does get security fixes but no new
development except for those of us who prefer 1.2 and backport 1.4
functionality.
I am also of the way of thinking "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
How many Asterisk 1.4.x releases have come out in the last month or
so?
