Hello

For those SOHO customers (ie. at most, a couple of POTS/ISDN connections and
simultaneous SIP calls) who'd rather not use a big, noisy PC to run
Freeswitch, I'd like to offer an alternative that has the following
features:

- not old hardware sold on eBay, ie. it must be up-to-date hardware sold by
a company currently in business
- compact, silent
- has room for a 2.5" hard-disk, but if not, must provide a CompactFlash
plug
- ideally, room for a PCI card, possibly laid down with a riser to save
space
- total cost (shipping + VAT) < 200 euro

If it's cheaper and not much work, I don't mind buying the parts and putting
the box together myself, but otherwise, I'd rather order a complete box,
ready-to-use.

What are my options to provide customers with that kind of solution?

Thank you for any hint.

Thanks. The "SolidLogic Little Falls 2699 Mini-ITX" @ $212 looks nice.

BTW, at 85€, the Linksys NSLU2 looks like a bargain:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2

Has someone successfully ran Freeswitch on this to handle a couple of
simultaneous SIP conversations?

What about the more expensive but very tiny Gumstix?

You might want to take a look at this:
http://www.amazon.com/IEEE802-11N-Wireless-Broadband-MZK-W04NU-Designed/dp/B000YDS0YG

- twice as much everything as the NSLU2, and is supposed to run OpenWRT
just fine. I've one sat in front of me right now, although I've not yet
plugged it in - have to work out how to take it apart first ;-)

Interesting Smile Thanks for the pointer.

I think it'd be very useful if the wiki included a list of devices that can
run Freeswitch in addition to a regular PC, especially those that cost <
$150.

Here's a list of makers of basic routers per www.cheaprouter.us:

2Wire, 3Com, ADTRAN, Apple, Belkin, CNet, CP Technology, Cisco, Cisco
Systems, Compaq, D-Link, Edimax, Efficient Networks, Hawking Technology,
Hewlett-Packard, Linksys, Motorola, Netgear, Netopia, Nortel, SMC, TP-Link,
TRENDnet, Zoom, ZyXel

For those of you used to tinker with this type of basic hardware...
1. Can a non-expert go from opening the box to getting a Freeswitch server
up and running without spending days figuring it out?
2. Are they fast enough for SOHO use (a couple of simultaneous SIP
conversations + small LAMP web server)?
3. Do they offer a CompactFlash plug to provide a few gigabytes of storage
before plugging an external drive?

Thank you.

That's what the wiki's for. If you create a login you can start a page
and start adding devices.

Yup, I'll start an article when I get enough information.

A perfect device is also the FitzBox 7270, which is very popular over
here in Germany (more than 5 Mio Installations).

http://www.avm.de/en/Produkte/FRITZBox/FRITZ_Box_Fon_WLAN_7270/index.php

It offers
- ISDN port
- 2 analogue ports (perfect for fax)
- DECT (GAP) for up to 6 devices
- 4 LAN ports
- WLAN draft n
- USB port
- and costs about 190 Euros incl. tax.

It's Linux based and a number of extension have been built for this
device, see
http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbox/index.php/Main_Page (unfortunately
in German)

If we could make it run with freeswitch + TLS/SRTP - wow!

Has anybody already tried to make FS running on that device?

Best regards
Peter

Dave,

it's not hard. I suppose I should add this to the wiki: http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=83701#p83701

Guys, I was trying to do the same to the Pika Warp. Too bad their support and development enviroment sucks. The best I could do (without too much effort) was run FS without the analog support.

Thanks a lot for the pointers Smile

At this point, alternatives < $100 to a regular PC or some appliance like
the FritzBox or the Pika Asterisk appliance:

Planex MZK-W04NU $60
Sheeva Plug $99
(Deprecated) Linksys NSLU2 $50

Does someone know of other solutions that can run Linux/FreeBSD along with
Freeswitch and a LAMP server?
