Hello,
triggering an email over the mailing list for each new forum post and allowing new mails to the mailing list only over from the forum is a good
compromise.
Ideally emails submitted to the mailing list shall be automatically mirrored to the forum and vice-versa, but this ideal scenario is maybe not
realistic.
I run myself mailing lists and I have to say this is really too much hard work to get it right (adjusting anti-spam software; rejecting at SMTP-level
emails, which would be otherwise bounced my the mailing list manager (sender used wrong address); DKIM/DMARC, etc). So a hosted mailing list for
freeswitch, instead of a self-hosted mailing list server could also be considered. However permitting emails from the forum to the currently
installed mailing list shall not be that hard to get right and I think is a good compromise.
Greetings
Dilyan

Only a small, hardcore group of forum enthusiasts who particularly like that medium will participate in forums; average people won't bother to keep
up with the forum because it requires work.
The net effect is that people only come to ask a specific question, the number of experts usefully answering questions is reduced, and that users

I don't know how many +1s you've had so far, but this is another one.
I think Alex has expressed extremely well why forums are not as effective as
lists.
I would also simply add that I am on quite a number of mailing lists, and it's
very convenient to deal with them all in one email client. If each one were
replaced by a forum, I would need multiple logged-in windows in a browser, and
have to actively switch back and forth between them to see if there were new
messages. This is the biggest thing for me which makes forums highly
unproductive.

Perhaps the new forum could function in a similar way to the mailing list? If you could receive responses via email and respond via email, then it would be the best of both worlds. I know most ticketing systems these days provide this functionality, the same is possible on a forum.

Hi Brian, list,
As others have said, running a ML can be a PITA.
While it changes the way everyone interacts, I have sympathy for the desire to switch
to something that doesn't require so much work just to keep it going without random spammers hijacking it.
As Brian said, "It's going to happen", and I don't blame him.
As this ML runs out of time, I just want to say that the devs have been very helpful over the years, and have done fS and the users proud.
People on list have been patient with me trying to set up fS in decidedly non-standard environments. That wouldn't have been possible without such help, so for that, many thanks.
As for fS itself, it's hard to remember quite how much better a platform it was than the other SIP stacks that surfaced -- it worked, robustly, from single user agents to full blown call centres & VoIP telco platforms. We take all that for granted now, so it's hard to remember quite how much of a revolution that was. Building that vision and maintaining it was a lot of work (not least, building something on top of sofia must have been a heck of a job), and I'm sure I'm not alone in thanking everyone for making it happen.
Personally, apart from helping us explore how to make SRV/NAPTRs work "in the real world", the relative ease to set up Video+Audio multi-person calls just using SIP & RTP was really useful to me, if only to show customers the "art of the possible". This was "old skool", before Web RTC & Verto, and yet it all worked.
[... and from experience there were far fewer calls over Skype needed to debug the SIP setup than with the other platforms — ahem - CISCO RTC/*/... - ahem]
So ... for all that -- and for free -- Many Thanks.
I wish everyone success with the switch, and hope it all works out as well as it has so far.
all the best
Lawrence

Exactly my thoughts, it can be a pain sometimes sifting through conversations in the mailing list, the forum will be an upgrade.

I agree with Brian. Changes are hard, but in the end, it will be better and more organized. 👍

I don't know how many +1s you've had so far, but this is another one.
I think Alex has expressed extremely well why forums are not as effective as
lists.
I would also simply add that I am on quite a number of mailing lists, and it's
very convenient to deal with them all in one email client. If each one were
replaced by a forum, I would need multiple logged-in windows in a browser, and
have to actively switch back and forth between them to see if there were new
messages. This is the biggest thing for me which makes forums highly
unproductive.

come with it, is a thankless chore. I run several myself and can relate
to the frustration.
However, from my perspective, it is by far the most effective way to
engage the broadest swath of users, for reasons already outlined by
others. Only a small, hardcore group of forum enthusiasts who
particularly like that medium will participate in forums; average people
won't bother to keep up with the forum because it requires work.
The net effect is that people only come to ask a specific question, the
number of experts usefully answering questions is reduced, and that users
don't stay broadly abreast of trends and project info which would
otherwise smile out in some way from their inbox.
