I think you need to do some more reading. I've not done a direct
comparison of the bandwidth costs but based on volumes alone I think
it's pretty cheap. The more people using them over time, economies of
scale kick in further too.
You also have to consider quality of bandwidth. If you host with a cheap
provider, you'll need to consider latency and packet loss as the major
factors - you'll not get many customers if the voice quality of your
lines suck. Conversely I don't think Amazon can associate it's name with
cheap providers.
Besides, it's a very cheap mechanism for start-ups to, erm, start up.
Hardly any capital investment needed.
